A NAVAL COMPLEX
The creation of the Naval Museum of Quebec is intimately linked to the one of the Naval Complex of Pointe-à-Carcy which accommodates the buildings of the Naval Reserve of Canada in the Old Port of Quebec. At the time of construction of the Canadian Forces Fleet School, in the centre of this complex, the officials of the Ministry of National Defence decided to include a first naval museum in Quebec.
THE BATTLE OF SAINT- LAURENT
The Naval Museum of Quebec opened its doors in 1995 and has chosen to focus its energies in the research of naval history, especially the one of the Battle of the St. Lawrence and the Naval Reserve of Canada, without forgetting its functions of collection, exhibition, and communication. It devotes his main exposure to the presentation of the marine universe since the beginning of the century, in wartime or peacetime.
THEMATIC EXHIBITION
We chose to approach the battle of Saint-Laurent in a global way that highlights the history and its impacts. Four themes were privileged and they cover the entire geographical territory between Quebec City and the St. Lawrence Gulf. These themes, divided according to the different impacts of the conflict, talk about the fights, the actors, the environment, and the everyday life.
STORY BY OBJECT
At the Naval Museum of Quebec, the story is told by the objects. There is a collection that consists of over 1000 objects and it continues to expand every year. In fact, the museum’s goal is to present a significant episode of the World War II in a new way.
